Bolgheri DOC Superiore

This is the project that enabled the birth of everything else. The challenge of a wine that would represent to the world the finest that Bolgheri could produce. Right from its initial vintage in 2003, a contemporary symbol of Italian winemaking.

Argentiera bears the fragrances of every season of the year: from that initial taste of summer’s dry heat, to winter’s cool touch of pungent balsam hidden amidst the tannins. A wine whose ceaseless, protean energy finds a masterful equilibrium, the sapient product of a process born and completed in nature, and whose innate strength is the primal force of life itself.

Vineyards & Terroir

This superb vineyard reaches 200 metres’ elevation, then swoops downwards from the hilltop towards the coast. This is the most extensive vineyard area, some 40 hectares in all, with the estate’s first plantings, in 2000. The rocky, claylimestone soils produce very impressive wine quality.

2020 Growing Season

General climate trend turned out to be satisfying despite the particularly dry year that only experienced rain from mid-May onwards. The weather during summer was regular and dry, without excessively high temperatures and only a thunderstorm by the end of August that brought 40 mm of rain, which became fundamental for the final stage of grape maturation.

2020 Harvest Notes

Harvest began in the second week of September and was distinguished by the fast gathering of perfectly ripe and healthy grapes, which were brought to the cellar between one rainy day and another. The second half of September experienced sudden changes: average temperature was below 20°C and rain has also fallen, an unusual phenomenon to witness along the Bolgheri coast. To prevent the rain from altering the rich characteristics of the grapes, the harvest of Merlot – especially in the highest sections of Argentiera – was hastened to bring perfectly ripe and balanced grapes to the cellar. The rain has not damaged the grapes, which have immediately expressed delicate aromas and exceptional elegance, revealing characteristics that are strikingly different from those harvested at the beginning of September. Waiting for the perfect polyphenolic maturity of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc led to harvesting abundant grapes towards the end of September, endowed with remarkable fruit.

The resulting wines are characterized by a great balance and harmony between tannins, acidity and aromas. A well-balanced and long-lived vintage.

Watch the 3D video of the Argentiera vineyard

This is the most extensive vineyard area, some 40 hectares in all, with the estate’s first plantings, in 2000. The rocky, claylimestone soils produce very impressive wine quality. The woodlands rising to the east of the vineyard act as a protective barrier for the vines, whose semi-circular, serried ranks face the sea and thus benefit from the reflected sunlight. In addition, the constant sea breezes cool the hot days during the ripening period.

Verify Authenticity

In order to protect and verify the authenticity of the wines, starting with the 2017 vintage of Argentiera and the 2015 of Ventaglio, a seal of authentication is affixed to each bottle before shipping.
Cutting-edge nanotechnology makes each Prooftag™ seal absolutely unique and unreproducible. Each seal contains information specific to that individual bottle, preserved in a data-base accessible to the consumer.

A separate QR code and a numeric code, combined with the Bubble Tag™ , make each bottle literally unique. The coded information can be traced and verified by Smartphone by utilizing the I-Proof or Mobiltag apps, or by accessing the relevant section on the website.
